“Punch” originates from the Indian word “panch,” meaning “five,” the number of ingredients needed to concoct this centuries-old drink. The rule of five served as a recipe designating two parts sour, and one part sweet, bitter and alcoholic. British explorers landing in India discovered the strong elixir and brought it back to England, where punch became a sophisticated 16th century drink at social functions. It made its way to America a century later, showing up on menus, invitations and notes documented around 1682. Punch would remain the party standard for the next four centuries!
